At the age of eighteen Drupon was ordained as a monk and thereafter received instructions on the Mahamudra and Dzogchen practices. He joined the Drikung monastery Jangchub Ling in Dehra Dun where he engaged in the study of Buddhist philosophy for three years. He then completed a traditional three year retreat in Almora, where he trained in the 5-fold path of Mahamudra and the six yogas of Naropa.

Following this retreat Drupon completed another three year retreat in Labchi, the sacred meditation place of Tibet’s great Yogi Milarepa. It is the holy place where Milarepa attained enlightenment within only one single lifetime. In Labchi Drupon engaged in the practice of the oral lineage of the 62 deities of Chakrasamvara, the oral lineage of the 15 deities of Vajravarahi and the oral lineage of Mahamudra and the six yogas of Naropa.
In Labchi Drupon endured many hardships following the footsteps of the great master Milarepa. Impelled by his fervent devotion to Milarepa, Drupon studied “The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa” extensively. Having become accomplished in practice His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche bestowed upon him the title “Drupon” or “Retreat Master”. Currently Drupon Rinchen Dorjee teaches and trains practitioners and retreatants in the West.
